Why existing tools fail

Failure one

The Numbers Aren't Measurements

Psychologist Joel Michell spent three decades documenting what he called the psychometricians' fallacy: the assumption that because psychological characteristics can be ordered they can therefore be measured. The assumption has never been tested. It has simply been inherited and marketed as scientific fact.

People Change. Profiles Don't.

Every major psychometric instrument treats the characteristics it measures as stable across contexts and over time. The research has known for decades that situational factors frequently outweigh dispositional ones in determining behaviour. The instruments were not designed to capture this. They cannot.

90% Acceptance Proves Nothing

High acceptance rates are routinely cited as evidence of validity. Wiley's own DiSC Research Report acknowledges that such rates are consistent with the Forer effect — the human tendency to accept vague, generally applicable descriptions as uniquely personal. Acceptance is not accuracy.

What neuroscience has established

The brain generates its world.
It doesn't just receive it.

Scottish neuroscientist Thomas Graham Brown observed in 1911 that the function of the senses is to modulate internally generated imagery. It took a century for neuroscience to catch up. Karl Friston's predictive processing account establishes this computationally: the brain is a prediction machine that uses sensory experience to correct its model of the world, not to build one from scratch.

If perceptual experience is generated from inside out — if what we perceive depends on what we predict — then behaviour is irreducibly contextual. The same person generates different perceptual orientations in different situations. Not inconsistently. Appropriately. The tool that cannot accommodate this has not yet understood the question.

The Framework

The Neuroperceptual framework has been in development for over a decade, grounded in predictive processing neuroscience, embodied cognition, and the distributional geometry of natural language. It began with a conviction that the dominant tools of applied psychology — DISC, the MBTI, the Big Five and their commercial derivatives — were not merely imperfect instruments but instruments built on foundations that had never been examined.

Joel Michell's analysis of the psychometricians' fallacy established the theoretical case for that conviction. The predictive processing research programme of Karl Friston, Andy Clark, Jakob Hohwy, and Anil Seth provided the alternative foundation. The Nobel Prize-winning work of John O'Keefe and the Mosers provided the neural architecture. George Lakoff provided the linguistic ground. The Circumplexicon provided the empirical realisation.
